Message engine size to that point. When they changed the entire body from 280Z to 280ZX, but kept the 2.8L size, they needed some way to denote the new version. They added the "X" to show it's more luxury slant, as well as having t-tops.

The 280ZX began in the 1979 model year. The Turbos didn't arrive until 1981.
